The gastric balloon is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure aimed at losing weight, as it depends on reducing the size of the stomach, by inserting a balloon, which reduces the amount of food intake, leading to weight loss.
Candidates for gastric balloon surgery
Many people are obese, and want to undergo a stomach balloon, but the stomach balloon is not suitable for all people, as the candidates for the operation fall into the following list:
A person who suffers from obesity and excessive fat masses.
The fat mass index should range between 30 and 35 kilograms for the person who is going to undergo the gastric balloon procedure.
The person is free from diseases that would hinder the gastric balloon procedure, such as; Gastritis or stomach ulcer.
The age of the person who will undergo the gastric balloon procedure must be over; Eighteen years.
People who have not undergone any kind of stomach or esophageal surgery.
Stages of the gastric ballon procedure:
It is done through some simple steps and stages, as follows:
The first stage: clinical examination
The doctor examines the excess fat masses, determines the amount of fat mass that should be reduced, and identifies the desired results for the person who is about to undergo the gastric ballon operation.
The second stage: preparing the patient
The medical staff prepares the person for the gastric balloon operation, and the anesthesiologist gives him local anesthesia, in addition to that he may take a sedative to help him relax during the operation
The third stage: insertion of the gastric balloon
The doctor inserts the gastric balloon through the mouth through the endoscope if relying on the (Orbera or Reshape) method, and the capsules are inserted when relying on (Obalon).
Fourth stage: filling the balloon
In the case of relying on the Orbera or Reshape method, the balloon is filled with a saline solution, but in the case of relying on the Obalon method, it is filled with nitrogen gas.
The balloon is left in the stomach for a period of between six or nine months, and the person practise his normal life during that period, then he returns to remove the balloon from the stomach.
